A nod to the restaurant’s iconic Cheddar Bay Biscuits®, this unique lobster has been affectionately named Cheddar

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (July 12, 2022) – There was something obviously very different about one of the lobsters shipped to a Red Lobster® restaurant in Hollywood, Florida. Employees at the restaurant immediately noticed the beautiful, bright orange color of the lobster, and they went on a mission to rescue the unique crustacean. Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach answered the call and happily welcomed the extraordinary orange lobster to her new home this week.

The Red Lobster and Ripley’s Aquarium teams affectionately named the orange lobster Cheddar in a nod to the restaurant’s beloved Cheddar Bay Biscuits®. Cheddar will be forever protected in the safety of her new habitat at Ripley’s. Orange lobsters like Cheddar are extremely rare – one-in-30 million – because their bright, unusual coloring makes them very attractive to predators.

“Sometimes ordinary miracles happen, and Cheddar is one of them,” said Mario Roque, a manager at Red Lobster who led the rescue of Cheddar. “A group of incredible people helped us make this possible. We are so honored to have been able to save Cheddar and find her a good home.”

“We are incredibly proud of Mario and the team for recognizing what a special and rare creature Cheddar is and for working relentlessly to find someone to rescue her,” said Nicole Bott, Senior Director, Communications at Red Lobster. “It is an honor to be able to share the story of Cheddar and provide her a new home where she can be enjoyed by many for years to come, all from the safety of her tank.”

Cheddar joins Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach as it celebrates a major milestone – 25 years of welcoming guests, making memories, and promoting an awareness of conservation. Myrtle Beach is also Ripley’s hub for scientific research. The company’s new Marine Science Research Center, where Cheddar is now acclimating, made waves earlier this year by producing the world’s first successful birth by artificial insemination of a sand tiger shark.

Monroe’s “Happy Birthday” dress – now also Kardashian’s Met Gala 2022 look – will go on display at Ripley’s Hollywood Memorial Day weekend

New York, NY – May 2, 2022 – Sixty years after Marilyn Monroe famously sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy, Kim Kardashian has added to the pop culture significance of Monroe’s iconic dress — becoming the only other person to ever wear the gown.

Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday” dress — now also Kim Kardashian’s 2022 Met Gala look — will be on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Hollywood for a limited time beginning Memorial Day weekend. Visitors will be able to get an up-close look at this stunning garment, along with a behind-the-scenes peek at Kim’s Met Gala look and other memorabilia from Marilyn Monroe and John F. Kennedy.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! acquired the dress at a Julien’s Auctions event in 2016 for $4.8 million. With taxes and fees, the dress’ value surpasses $5 million, making it the world’s most expensive dress ever sold at auction. Believe It or Not!, the gown is now valued at over $10 million.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! strongly feels that this dress, with both political and pop culture significance, is the most famous item of clothing from twentieth century culture.

“We are truly proud to be the stewards of such an iconic artifact and are excited to be able to add to its cultural significance with Kim Kardashian, who is sharing the story of Marylin Monroe and her iconic career with an entirely new generation,” said Ripley’s VP of Publishing and Licensing Amanda Joiner.

The multi-million-dollar dress has rarely been separated from its dress form, let alone worn by anyone other than Monroe. Great care was taken to preserve this piece of history. With input from garment conservationists, appraisers, archivists, and insurance, the garment’s condition was top priority. No alterations were made to the dress, and Kim Kardashian even changed into a replica before entering the Gala.

Shave the Beard and Make It Weird! Campaign Encourages Participants to Lose Their Locks for Charity

Orlando, FL (November 23, 2021) – Beards, bangs, or an entire bowl cut — Ripley’s Believe It or Not! wants to use your hair to break the Guinness World Records™ title for Largest Ball of Human Hair! Joining forces with No-Shave November and Floyd’s 99 Barbershops of Florida, Ripley’s will be collecting hair to add to its famous “Hoss the Human Hairball” from now until December 10, 2021.

As part of its Shave the Beard and Make It Weird! campaign, Ripley’s is encouraging entries from all over. Participants can either visit a participating Floyd’s location or mail in their mane — even just a snip of split ends — to the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Headquarters in Orlando, Florida, to help achieve the world record.

Initially created by stylist Steve Warden, Hoss eclipsed 100 pounds in 2019 and is now close to surpassing the current record of 167 pounds. To achieve its goal of obtaining the title of Largest Ball of Human Hair, Ripley’s launched the Shave the Beard and Make It Weird! campaign at last week’s International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) annual conference, raising more than $30,000 for Give Kids The World Village, an 89-acre, whimsical non-profit in Central Florida that provides critically ill children and their families with magical weeklong wish vacations at no cost.

Hoss the Human Hairball

In true Ripley’s fashion, Jim Pattison Jr., President of Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, contributed his own beard to Hoss during the IAAPA Expo. “At the beginning of the pandemic, I told my team that I wouldn’t shave until all Ripley’s Attractions reopened. Today, I’m proud to say that we have successfully and safely opened our doors worldwide. My shave from Floyd’s was the icing on the cake,” said Jim Pattison Jr. “After over a year of growing my beard, I can relate and am sure No-Shave November participants are also looking forward to fresh face!” If the record is achieved, Ripley’s will donate $5,000 to Give The Kids The World Village, in addition to the $1,000 already given by Floyd’s.

Contest to find next great invention open to kids ages 4–11

ORLANDO, FL – October 14, 2021 – Whether it’s a doorbell that shoots popcorn, a karaoke bucket and mop or a three-story bathtub, sometimes the craziest, most outrageous ideas come from the youngest minds. To celebrate those on an early path to discovery, Ripley’s has launched a worldwide contest to find the next great kids’ invention.

Inspired by the ingenuity and creative talent found in this year’s Believe It or Not! book, Ripley’s has teamed up with UK-based YouTube channel Kids Invent Stuff to create the Out of the Box Invention Challenge. Starting today, kids ages 4–11 can submit their ideas aimed at making life better either for themselves, their parents, family, friends, pets — or even the world!

“The idea for the Invention Challenge came from this year’s Believe It or Not! annual,” says Ripley Entertainment Creative Content Manager, Sabrina Sieck. “From a pizza-making machine made from LEGO, to a cannon that shoots Christmas trees, Out of the Box celebrates those who found a spark of inspiration during a year that left little room for creative thinking. We want to prove that no idea is too big or too wild, and with a little innovation and imagination, anyone can be in the pages of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! This partnership with Kids Invent Stuff is just one step towards Ripley’s goal of working closely with creators to achieve the unbelievable,” she says.

To enter, children should submit their ideas to Ripley’s and Kids Invent Stuff including as many details as possible, such as a visual, drawing, and/or video explaining their creative contraption. This contest is open for entry now through November 20, 2021.

One grand prize winner will be selected following the close of the contest and their invention will be built and brought to life by the Kids Invent Things team.

The winning invention will appear on the Kids Invent Stuff YouTube channel in December and will then be moved to a Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium for others to see and experience. The invention will also be featured — alongside the inventor— in next year’s Ripley’s Believe It or Not! annual book.

The Legendary Fertility Statues Arrive in Ocean City!

 The Most Popular Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Touring Exhibit Begins Limited Engagement on Ocean City Boardwalk.

Ocean City, MD (September 11, 2019)Legendary Fertility Statues that have been credited with helping thousands of happy couples conceive can be found at Ocean City’s weirdest spot – Ripley’s Believe It or Not! on the Boardwalk. These powerful statues are on display now and free for guests to see and touch.

While admission is required for entrance to the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium and other attractions, the Fertility Statues have been positioned in the lobby allowing free access for those who wish to touch the legendary works of art.

Ripley’s acquired the statues, which measure 5-feet-tall and weigh more than 70 lbs each, in 1993. The statues are made from ebony wood and were hand-carved by craftsman of the Baulé tribe of the West African nation of Cote D’Ivoire in the 1930s.

THE LEGEND

According to tribal legend, to ensure a couple’s fertility, the statues should be placed on both sides of the doorway leading into the bedroom. If a woman or her spouse touches either statue as they enter the room, they will soon get pregnant.

While Ripley’s cannot loan the statues to prospective parents for their bedrooms, the power of the statues is still strong. Thousands of women have written to Ripley’s claiming that after years of trying to conceive, one rub of the statues soon brought a bundle of joy.

When Ripley’s first received the statues in 1993, they were displayed at their Headquarters. A few months later, Ripley’s experienced a Baby Boom! Six employees became pregnant after touching the statues, and word started to spread. Women requested to visit the office just to touch the statues.

Over the years, Ripley’s has received countless messages from couples. Here are a few of their very personal stories:

VICTORIA
I came to see the statues in London in November, and although it is in its early days, I am pregnant!

MELISSA
I had been unsuccessful for a few months trying to get pregnant through fertility treatments. I went on a two-week European vacation. Our last stop was London to touch the fertility statues. A few weeks later I returned to the States, and my next treatment was successful! We had a baby girl in March!

LAUREN
We had a long road trying to get pregnant. I went to the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium and rubbed both statues, and within 48 hours we learned we were pregnant.

SAMANTHA
We were trying for about two years, and the doctors told us they didn’t think it would be possible for us to have children. The statues were something that we thought “Why not give it a try?” So we did, and here she is, and I would touch them again.
