30 Years Later, Theater of Wax Still Bringing Life into Alamo Plaza

30 years ago, Express News posed the question “Theater of Wax: Will it help put some life into Alamo Plaza?” The answer is yes, it absolutely did!

The Theater of Wax was one of the first family-friendly attractions to open across from the Alamo, and since then, Alamo Plaza has become a bustling hub of entertainment for friends and families with restaurants, shops, and attractions.

A lot has happened in the years since we opened. The Theater of Wax became Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks, and is now part of Ripley Entertainment’s family of attractions at Alamo Plaza, which includes Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium and Ripley’s 4D Moving Theater.

Waxworks by the Numbers

  • Employees throughout the years: 1,400
  • Visitors to the Attraction: 6 million
  • Wax figures since opening: 325
  • Renovations: 5

Then and Now

The Theater of Wax opened in 1987 with 250 wax figures, and the attraction has gone through many changes over the years, both inside and out.

Wax figures have gone in and out of style. The original show displayed figures like Lou Grant from the Mary Tyler Moore Show, Jerry Lewis, and Sanford and Son – just to name a few.

Original-Wax

Today, figures range from the iconic like Marilyn Monroe to pop-culture celebrities like Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Jimmy Kimmel, and Iron Man.
